Professor Hind Al-Abadleh Fund
“Professor Hind Al-Abadleh taught us that true greatness is not only found in discovery, but in the compassion to lift others, the courage to stand for justice, and the humility to serve humanity through knowledge.”
Professor Hind Al-Abadleh (1977–2025) was an inspiring Canadian Muslim scientist whose life was defined by excellence, compassion, and service.
Born and raised in the United Arab Emirates, Hind’s brilliance shone from an early age.
After earning her BSc in Chemistry at UAE University, she pursued her PhD at the University of Iowa and completed postdoctoral research at Northwestern University.
In 2004, she immigrated to Canada—a country she came to love deeply and proudly called home after becoming a citizen in 2009.
For nearly two decades, Hind shaped minds and advanced science at Wilfrid Laurier University, where she was a beloved professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry.
She built a thriving research program in environmental physical chemistry, leading the EPIC Lab and mentoring dozens of students.
Her work on air quality, environmental justice, and public health reflected her conviction that science must serve humanity.
In August 2024, she began a new chapter as Chair of the Department of Earth, Environmental and Resource Sciences at the University of Texas, bringing her vision and leadership to yet another stage.
Beyond her scientific achievements, Hind was celebrated for her generosity of spirit, her humility, and her tireless advocacy for equity in the sciences.
She championed the voices of racialized and equity-deserving scholars, earning national recognition for her leadership in diversity and inclusion.
Her colleagues remember her as a gifted scientist with a pure heart, while her students recall her passion for science and her unshakable belief in their potential.
In her too-short life, Hind earned many honours—the University Research Professor Award, the Hoffman-Little Award, the Gilead Award for Excellence in Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, Ontario’s Early Researcher Award, and the “Women Who Inspire” Award from the Coalition of Muslim Women, among others.
But perhaps her greatest legacy lies in the countless lives she touched through her mentorship, her advocacy, and her example of living with integrity and purpose.
True to her generous nature, Hind left a bequest to the Olive Tree Foundation to establish a fund in her memory.
This fund will support initiatives that reflect Hind’s passions: science in service of humanity, justice in service of equity, and compassion in service of community.
By contributing to the Professor Hind Al-Abadleh Fund, you can help carry forward her vision.
Your support will not only honour her memory but also ensure that her values live on in the work of young scientists and community leaders who share her commitment to knowledge, justice, and care for the environment.
Professor Hind Al-Abadleh’s life reminds us that true greatness is found not only in discovery but also in the generosity to lift others up.
Through this fund, her legacy will continue to nurture hope, opportunity, and impact for years to come.
Together, we can carry forward the vision of a remarkable Canadian Muslim scientist whose impact will live on through the generations she continues to inspire.
